taz3. The M22 is not physically stronger then the M20 or M21, the difference is the way the gears are cut. The M22 was originally designed for road racing, where temperatures were increased with the steeper cut gears of the M21, so the M22 was design with a straighter cut gear to reduce heat.

R. Rick_L · #2 · Jul 6, 2011. I would not recommend a Muncie M22 or M21 for any street driven or drag race car. It's simply not the right gear ratios for anything but road racing. The 2.20 low gear is just not low enough. If you want a 4 speed, get a Muncie M20 with a 2.52 low gear ratio.

I have a 68 Camaro with the original L48 (engine pad # matching Protect o Plate number), mated with a transmission that I was told is a Muncie M22. The engine was a 425ftlb Gen2 Coyote sealed crate engine making a low 10sec pass @ 3100lbs. Note that how fast the clutch pulls the engine down has a huge effect on the height of the torque spike.
