From the upper trailhead, the first 3 miles of the Middle Fork Escalante Trail #631 traverses at a slight down grade through aspen and follows along a series of beaver ponds. The next mile travels through predominately oakbrush mixed with aspen and ponderosa pine, until the trail reaches the rim overlooking Escalante Canyon.

With plenty of cactus, sagebrush and 400 foot sandstone cliffs, its hard to believe the area is home to a great stretch of whitewater.
